In Memory of Matt Hemly ~
On Sunday, July 23, 2023, Matt Hemly passed away at the age of 47.
Family Man: Leaving behind the loves of his life -Sarah and their two children ages 11 and 13, the community has lost the most giving man we know, Matt Hemly. Shaking our world as we know it, Matt succumbed to an accident while preparing for the pear harvest season. In his shortened stay on earth, he left behind a lifetime of smiles and a lifetime of love to keep our hearts full.
Matt passed one day before the start of the pear harvest. The family and employees will have to set aside their mourning for a short time and focus on the harvest. Matt would want it this way. Sarah, the kids, Doug, and Virginia will get through the harvest – in Matt’s honor. The strength of this family is astounding, yet perfect.
The family has vowed to forge on and will continue to produce pears that have fed people nationwide for over 160 years. “Every single one of us is going to do what it takes to keep this going,” Sarah said. “There’s no stopping us.”
There is no doubt, they are in good hands as many local farmers have offered to provide the help they may need. That just the way a small town works. That's just what Matt would be doing for them.
The Hemly family name might be familiar. Matt and his sister, Virginia, are the 6th generation farmers of Greene & Hemly located in Courtland. They grow pears and apples, recently taking the business over from their parents Doug and Cathy. Sadly in April, Matt’s Mom, Cathy passed away.
This is so much more than any of our families should have to go through. During this very difficult and private time, we offer prayers and strength to all of Matt’s family, friends, and the communities Matt was so involved in. There really are no words to describe this loss of life and how much Matt will be missed.
The Rotarian in our Community: Matt has Rotary in his blood. His dad, Doug, was a part of our Rotary Club of Walnut Grove for many years. During this time, Matt took first place in our Speech Contest at both the club and district levels. Unable to continue further because of cancellation at higher levels of the contest. Matt is a RYLA attendee and a Scholarship recipient from our club. There is no doubt that Matt took these experiences to a greater level in life and work.
The Fix it Man: Whatever broke, whenever it broke, Matt was the guy to call. Day or Night, he would show up. This is a monumental loss for our small town. Matt was everything to everyone!
