He was born to Lincoln and Minnie Chan of Courtland, and spent his life in the small delta town, attending Bates Elementary School, Courtland High School and UC Davis.
Among other school activities, Wally earned the very prestigious FFA award of American Farmer in 1958. He was a member of the United States Air Force National Guard. A third generation pear farmer, he worked for his family business, Lincoln Chan Farms, of Courtland all his life and eventually founded his own company, Wallace Chan Farms, Inc.
He was a family man, devoted to his grandfather, parents, brothers, children and grandchildren, employees and members of the community. His farming instinct, wisdom, advice and hard work made his company respected and sought-after.
Wally is survived by his wife of 45 years, Debbie, and three children, Sonya (Tony Wittry), Katie (Scott Heringer) and Christopher (Haley) and seven beloved and cherished grandchildren, Brendan Chan-Wittry, Derek Chan-Wittry, Parker Heringer, Olivia Heringer, Connor Chan, Sadie Chan and Ivy Chan.
Predeceased by his parents, Wally will be lovingly remembered by his brothers Douglas Chan and Dennis Chan and their families as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who have become family.
In accordance with his wishes, he was buried in a private ceremony by his immediate family at the Franklin cemetery. those who wish to attend the celebration of life to be held April 14, is asked to contact a family member.
In his honor, donations can be made to the Courtland Volunteer Fire Department, Make-a-Wish Foundation, Sacramento River Delta Historical Society or the local charity of your choice.
The family thanks Dr. Stephen Wang, his oncologist and PCP, Libby Slider, who found a way to keep him nourished, and Dr. Amy Yau, Head & Neck Surgeon, who was his cheerleader and dear advisor, all of the South Sacramento Kaiser Medical Center.
We also owe a great debt to Bronda Bombola McCarter and her staff at Kaiser’s at the DoCo Kaiser Infusion Center, the many loving and dedicated nurses and therapists in the Med/Surge unit on 4E, and Critical Care unit at 2E, also at South Sac Kaiser.
